Tattoo & PMU Removal — Laser
Description
LASER TATTOO & PMU REMOVAL
ND:YAG Laser Technology
Treatment Description:
ND:YAG laser technology is one of the most widely used and effective methods for removing unwanted permanent makeup and tattoos. It is specifically designed to target pigment in the skin while protecting the surrounding tissue.
Unlike older laser systems, the ND:YAG laser works by delivering short, powerful pulses of light that are absorbed by the pigment particles in the skin. These pulses break the pigment into smaller fragments, which are then gradually removed by the body’s natural immune system over the following weeks.
The ND:YAG laser is particularly effective for dark pigments commonly used in permanent makeup, such as black, dark brown, and grey. When performed correctly with appropriate settings, it offers controlled pigment reduction with a low risk of scarring.
Visible fading can often be seen after the first session, although complete removal usually requires multiple sessions depending on pigment type, depth, saturation, and individual skin response.

How ND:YAG Laser Removal Works
1. Targeting the Pigment
The ND:YAG laser emits specific wavelengths of light that are selectively absorbed by pigment in the skin. Dark pigments absorb this energy efficiently, allowing the laser to focus on the ink without significantly affecting surrounding tissue.
2. Fragmentation of Pigment
The laser energy causes rapid heating and photoacoustic disruption of the pigment particles. This breaks the pigment into smaller fragments that the body can process more easily.
3. Natural Clearance by the Body
After treatment, the fragmented pigment particles are gradually removed through the lymphatic system over several weeks, resulting in progressive fading of the unwanted colour.

What to Expect
Treatment Plan
The number of sessions required depends on:
• Colour of the pigment
• Saturation and depth of implantation
• Number of previous PMU or tattoo layers
• Individual immune response
• Skin type
Some clients experience noticeable fading after one session, while others require multiple treatments for optimal clearance.
Possible Side Effects
Temporary side effects may include:
• Redness
• Swelling
• Mild tenderness
• Light crusting or pinpoint scabbing
These effects usually settle within a few days to one week.
Effectiveness Compared to Older Laser Systems
ND:YAG lasers are significantly more advanced and precise than older laser technologies. They are widely used in medical and aesthetic settings for pigment removal due to their reliability and safety profile when used by trained practitioners.
⸻
Sensation During Treatment
Clients commonly describe the sensation as a short, sharp snapping feeling or brief heat on the skin. Discomfort is usually well tolerated, and eyebrow PMU removal treatments are typically completed within a few minutes.
⸻
Eyebrow Hair Safety
ND:YAG laser treatment is designed to target pigment in the skin, not the hair follicle.
Temporary lightening or frosting of eyebrow hairs may occur immediately after treatment, particularly on darker natural hair. This effect fades within days as the natural hair colour returns.
Hair follicles are not permanently damaged. Normal brow growth resumes, and in some cases, hair growth may appear slightly stimulated due to increased circulation in the treated area.
If you tint your brows, it is recommended to allow the tint to fade before laser treatment. Brow lamination and similar treatments can be resumed two weeks after removal.
⸻
Healing Appearance
Immediately after treatment, the treated area may appear red, slightly swollen, or temporarily frosted. Mild crusting may develop but usually resolves quickly. Most clients are comfortable returning to normal activities the next day, including wearing makeup once the skin is intact.
⸻
Results and Colour Changes
Results vary depending on:
• Pigment formulation
• Depth and saturation
• Skin response
• Previous PMU work
Dark pigments (black, dark brown, grey) typically respond best to ND:YAG laser. Lighter colours such as yellow, white, and some greens are more resistant to laser removal and may require alternative techniques or combination treatments.
⸻
Retreatment and New Permanent Makeup
After your final laser session, you must wait at least 12 weeks before having new permanent makeup applied. This allows the skin to fully heal and ensures any remaining pigment has cleared.
Brow tinting and lamination may be resumed two weeks after treatment.
⸻
Scarring Risk
When performed correctly using appropriate settings, ND:YAG laser removal has a very low risk of scarring. The technology is designed to minimise damage to surrounding tissue. Following pre- and post-care instructions is essential to reduce risks and support optimal healing.
⸻
Pre-Treatment Care
• Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning for two weeks before treatment
• Discontinue retinol and active exfoliants one week prior
• Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medication for 24 hours before treatment (unless prescribed)
• Arrive with clean skin free of makeup
• Inform your practitioner about medications, medical conditions, or recent procedures
⸻
Aftercare
• Keep the area clean and dry for 24 hours
• Avoid applying creams or ointments for the first 3 days unless advised
• Apply a cold compress if swelling occurs
• Avoid heat exposure (sauna, steam room, hot showers) for 48 hours
• Avoid swimming for 48 hours
• After 3 days, apply soothing aloe vera if needed
• Use SPF 50 on the treated area throughout the healing period
• Do not scratch, pick, or exfoliate
• Allow at least 4 weeks between sessions
CONSULTATION REQUIRED FOR ALL PERMANENT MAKEUP AND REMOVAL PROCEDURES
Before any permanent makeup procedure or pigment removal session, a consultation is required.
During the consultation, we will:
• Assess your skin type and condition
• Discuss your desired outcome, style, and shape
• Identify any contraindications or medical conditions
• Plan the treatment, pigment choice, and technique
• Provide pre-care instructions and answer all questions
Note: The consultation ensures a personalised, safe, and effective treatment plan. Permanent makeup or removal procedures cannot be booked or performed without prior consultation.
